A Snapshot of
Maldon
Maldon is a town steeped in
history. The National Trust declared it Australia's first Notable Town in 1966.
It once had quartz reefs that were among the world's richest, attracting a
population which built grand houses and a very busy commercial centre. Maldon is
a marvellous holiday destination.
Maldon, the way it
was is the way it is
Here are some ideas for making the most of your time in Maldon, Australia's
First Notable Town, with your friends, clients or passengers. You could include some
of the following suggestions . . .

Drive up Mount Tarrangower, where you can get a 360 degree view of the town and
surrounding
countryside. The road provides the oldest and longest vintage car
and motor cycle hill climb in

Parking
Park in the special bus parking area just under the Beehive Chimney (the only
chimney of its type still standing). Look around the ruins with your guide. Or
you can park in Fountain Street, beside the Shire Gardens
and Museum. There are picnic facilities and electric BBQs under shelter
in the gardens behind the Museum.
Places to eat and drink
Your passengers can then take a short walk downhill to Main street, where there
are cafes and coffee shops offering inexpensive
lunches, and pubs which offer special rates for seniors and large
groups. Or you can buy your lunch and enjoy eating it in the
peaceful surroundings of the Shire Gardens.
Browse around the shops
After lunch, browse around the shops, drop in for an ice cream, buy
lollies or teddies for the children, bric a brac, beautiful lace bed and table
linen and a wide range of antiques - from 50s nostalgia to
beautiful old antiques.
Walk
"Town Walk" brochures are available, go to "Maps"
on the menu and download copies. Then
walk up historic National Trust classified Main Street and High Street.
Continue up High Street to see the Post Office where the famous Australian author
Henry Handel Richardson lived as a girl. Cross the road to have a look inside
the beautiful old ragstone church with its incredible timber ceiling and ornate
pipe organ, then drop in next door at Vivian's House to see the Maldon Marbles,
beautiful low relief marble sculptures, based on ancient Greek mythology.
Dream a little
Have a look in the Real Estate Agents’ windows in Main Street and dream a
little.
Step back in time
Organise a trip to Carman's Tunnel Gold mine (bookings required during the week),
or on Wednesdays and Sundays take a trip on the old steam train all the way to
Castlemaine and back (120 minutes) through the forest. For the historically
minded, a visit to the Maldon Museum and Archives is another great after lunch
activity (bookings required outside normal hours of opening), or drive out to
Porcupine Township, an 1850s town recreated on original diggings.
Stay overnight or longer . . .
There is a large selection of places to stay, from Motels, traditional B&Bs, over 30
self-contained cottages, two caravan parks and Derby Hill Blue
Light Youth Camp and Conference Centre,.
In the evening
After dark in Maldon, enjoy the cafes and restaurants, the
quiet of the town, and look at the stars.
. .
If you are in a car
