ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Our Museum is a social history museum and an essential part of the historic Maldon experience; naturally the Museum is located in an historic building. The old Maldon Market House, later the Maldon Shire Hall, was built in 1859. This State heritage-listed building was constructed at the heart of Maldon’s civic precinct just six years after the discovery of gold on the Tarrangower goldfields.
The Museum opened in 1966 and now cares for around 5,000 items, covering a diverse range of themes including mining, settlement, local government and community institutions, and the making of Maldon from tent town through to the present day.
